The Simmons Family
Margaret Simmons and her children, Nick and Claire (pictured above), from Watford in Hertfordshire, arranged a second annual golf day in memory of their father, Roger Simmons, in October 2009, donating the proceeds to brain tumour research. Claire describes the significance of the event in her own words below:
Our dad, Roger, was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme, a form of brain tumour following a seizure while on holiday in America in October 2007. He started radio and chemotherapy soon after, but was admitted to The University College London hospital at the end of December and tragically lost his battle on 23rd January 2008, a lot sooner than we had all expected.
Our dad, described by many as the perfect husband, father and grandfather, is greatly missed by many people. We are all still trying to come to terms with our immense loss but felt by holding the memorial day we can remember and honour him while raising money for an extremely worthwhile cause.
Our dad's birthday was the 1st November, so we decided to hold the memorial, charity day as close to this date as possible. Last year we held a Golf Day at Aldenham Golf Club, Hertfordshire, where our dad was a member and played regularly. We had 45 friends and family playing and raised £1068 for The Brain Research Trust.
This year, on Friday 30th October, we once again held a Golf Day, where our numbers had increased to 62 and we extended the event into the evening by having a disco, raffle and silent auctions. We were extremely lucky to have the support of many family and friends on the day as well as generous donations to help us raise more than £2,000. We hope to continue our events annually and continue raising more for the BRT.
