APPEAL OF THE YEAR

This year we focus on Brain Tumours and discuss the research you've helped us with >>

News

The BRT has funded a great number of projects during the past few years, which have looked into the causes of brain tumours and the best way to treat them. The long-term strategy of both the BRT and the Institute is to expand this research considerably. A new centre for the study of brain cancer is being planned within the newly-opened £40 million UCL Cancer Institute on Huntley Street.

Clinical trials for the treatment of brain tumours will involve neurosurgeons and oncologists from both the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the UCL Hospitals NHS Trust, while the basic scientific research will be undertaken at the Institute of Neurology by Professors Sebastian Brandner and Parmjit Jat and by Dr Tracy Warr.

This exciting collaboration would be led by the newly appointed neurosurgeon Dr Gelareh Zadeh. Dr Zadeh (pictured right) is one of the few female brain surgeons in the world. She is also a specialist in fast-track day surgery for malignant brain tumours. Until now patients have had to stay in hospital for up to a week after brain tumour surgery to allow them to recover fully from the after-effects of a general anaesthetic. But with day surgery, doctors can carry out the entire procedure under local anaesthetic. Day brain surgery is already a standard procedure in other countries.

Please help the BRT to continue to fund vital brain tumour research by continuing to support us with your donations.

New appeals see BRT gain hundreds of new supporters

We would like to extend a warm welcome to those of you who have been prompted to visit our website for the first time following our recent appeal letter. Working with CSDM, a Herefordshire-based direct marketing organisation specialising in the charity sector, the appeal has so far reached 100,000 people. The CSDM appeal has the joint purpose of making the work of the BRT more widely known, as well as raising vital funding for neurological research.

We would also like to welcome all of our new NHS supporters visiting the website for the first time following our recent advertisement through the online NHS Directory, provided by Healthcare Communications.

The Parkinson's Appeal

The Parkinson's Appeal was set up in 2001, to secure the long term future of the Institute of Neurology’s Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) team, led by the world-renowned Neurosurgeon, Professor Marwan Hariz. Since Professor Hariz’ team was set up his team has achieved over 100 DBS operations with a very high success rate, in addition to research of worldwide significance.
