India Trek - Autumn 2007

Dharamasala trekkers leaving campWalkers are offered a ten-day trip to Dharamsala, the northern city well known as the home of the Dalai Lama since 1959. This trek takes you through the lands of the Gaddi, the semi-nomadic race who spend many months wandering the high mountain pastures with their sheep and whose language and traditions are distinct from the rest of the country.

The trek offers incredible views of the Daula Dhar mountains, a southern branch of the Himalayas. You will walk through the mountain villages with terraced fields, through dense mixed forests of oak, rhododendron, pine and bamboo, and stay in some beautiful camping spots. As well as stunning scenery, the terrain includes rivers, mountain streams and mixed forest -offering fine bird-watching.

Before embarking on the trek, you will visit His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s monastery and residence. During the five days of trekking you will be staying in tents overnight and trekking between 5-6 hours a day, occasionally at an altitude of 3,000 metres. During the day temperatures are fairly warm, between 18-20°C although it can be much cooler at night. On your final day you will have the chance to explore the Taj Mahal – one of the greatest monuments to love ever built.
